Stat. tit. 63, § 63-1-1973","heading":"Self-administration of medication – Assistance from","body":"certified nurse aide.\n\nA. Patients who are capable of self-administering their own\n\nmedications without assistance shall be encouraged and allowed to do\n\nso. However, a certified nurse aide may assist a patient whose\n\ncondition is medically stable with the self-administration of\n\nroutine, regularly scheduled medications that are intended to be\n\nself-administered, if the following conditions are met:\n\n1. For an oral medication, the medication shall have been\n\nplaced in a medication planner by a registered nurse, a relative of\n\nthe patient or nursing staff of an Oklahoma licensed home health or\n\nhospice agency that is currently serving the patient; and\n\n2. For all other forms, the certified nurse aide shall assist\n\nwith self-administration consistent with a dispensed prescription's\n\nlabel or the package directions of an over-the-counter medication.\n\nB. For purposes of this section, self-administered medications\n\ninclude both legend and over-the-counter oral dosage forms, topical\n\ndosage forms and topical ophthalmic, otic and nasal dosage forms\n\nincluding solutions, suspensions, sprays and inhalers.\n\nC. Assistance with self-administration of medication by a\n\ncertified nurse aide may occur only upon a documented request by,\n\nand the written informed consent of, a patient or the patient's\n\nsurrogate, guardian or attorney-in-fact.\n\nD. For purposes of this section, assistance with self-\n\nadministration of medication includes:\n\n1. Taking an oral medication out of a pill planner and bringing\n\nit to the patient;\n\n2. Placing an oral dosage in the patient's hand or placing the\n\ndosage in another container and helping the patient by lifting the\n\ncontainer to his or her mouth;\n\n3. If ordered by a physician, placing an oral medication in\n\nfood before the patient self-administers;\n\n4. Crushing an oral medication pursuant to orders given by a\n\nphysician or health care professional;\n\n5. Applying topical medications; and\n\n6. Keeping a record of when a patient receives assistance with\n\nself-administration pursuant to this section.\n\nE. For purposes of this section, assistance with self-\n\nadministration of medication does not include:\n\n1. Removing oral medication from any container other than a\n\npill planner;\n\n2. Mixing, compounding, converting or calculating medication\n\ndoses;\n\n3. The preparation of syringes for injection or the\n\nadministration of medications by any injectable route;\n\n4. Administration of medications through intermittent positive\n\npressure breathing machines;\n\n5. Administration of medications by way of a tube inserted in a\n\ncavity of the body;\n\n6. Administration of parenteral preparations;\n\n7. Irrigations or debriding agents used in the treatment of a\n\nskin condition;\n\n8. Rectal, urethral, or vaginal preparations;\n\n9. Medications ordered by the physician or health care\n\nprofessional with prescriptive authority to be given \"as needed\",\n\nunless the order is written with specific parameters that preclude\n\nindependent judgment on the part of the certified nurse aide, and at\n\nthe request of a competent patient;\n\n10. Medications for which the time of administration, the\n\namount, the strength of dosage, the method of administration or the\n\nreason for administration requires judgment or discretion on the\n\npart of the certified nurse aide; or\n\n11. Assistance with the self-administration of medication by a\n\ncertified nurse aide in an assisted living center through home care\n\nservices as provided for in Section 1-890.8 of Title 63 of the\n\nOklahoma Statutes.\n\nF. Assistance with the self-administration of medication by a\n\ncertified nurse aide as described in this section does not\n\nconstitute administration as defined in Section 353.1 of Title 59 of\n\nthe Oklahoma Statutes.\n\nG. The State Commissioner of Health may by rule establish\n\nprocedures and interpret terms as necessary to implement the\n\nprovisions of this section.\n\nH. For purposes of this section:\nF. Assistance with the self-administration of medication by a\n\ncertified nurse aide as described in this section does not\n\nconstitute administration as defined in Section 353.1 of Title 59 of\n\nthe Oklahoma Statutes.\n\nG. The State Commissioner of Health may by rule establish\n\nprocedures and interpret terms as necessary to implement the\n\nprovisions of this section.\n\nH.
