Registered nurses are authorized to use physician-approved\n\nprotocols to provide public health services when performing duties\n\nas an employee or as a contractor, as defined in Section 803 of\n\nTitle 18 of the Oklahoma Statutes, on behalf of the city-county\n\nhealth departments, county health departments, and the State\n\nDepartment of Health.\n\nB. The Department shall have a designated Medical Director\n\nresponsible for maintaining the protocols to reflect the current\n\nstandard of care. Protocols shall be consistent with published\n\nclinical practice guidelines established or endorsed by nationally\n\nrecognized professional medical organizations, societies,\n\nassociations and federal agencies. The physician-approved protocols\n\nshall be reviewed annually and updated as needed. Physician-\n\napproved protocols shall be approved through Department policy.\n\nC. The establishment of a physician-patient relationship is not\n\nnecessary for the physician-approved protocol to be implemented by\n\nthe registered nurse when providing public health services on behalf\n\nof a city-county health department, county health department or the\n\nDepartment.\n\nD. The State Department of Health shall promulgate and\n\nimplement policies and procedures to ensure the registered nurse has\n\nproper training, education and supervision prior to and during the\n\nprovision of public health services.\n\nE. Medical algorithms may be utilized or referenced in the\n\nphysician-approved protocols to assist in providing the public\n\nhealth services.\n\nF. The registered nurse may dispense prepackaged\n\nnonprescription medications and recommend nonprescription\n\nmedications pursuant to the physician-approved protocols.\n\nG.
