Stat. tit. 63, § 63-1-562","heading":"Definitions","body":"As used in the Genetic Counseling Licensure Act:\n\n1. “ABGC” means the American Board of Genetic Counseling;\n\n2. “ABMG” means the American Board of Medical Genetics;\n\n3. “General supervision” means the process of a supervisor,\n\nwhether licensed as a genetic counselor or a physician, having\n\noverall responsibility to assess the work of a supervisee, including\n\nregular meetings and chart reviews. An annual supervision contract\n\nsigned by the supervisor and supervisee shall be on file with both\n\nparties; and\n\n4. “Genetic counseling” means a communication process,\n\nconducted by one or more appropriately trained individuals, that\n\nincludes:\n\na. estimating the likelihood of occurrence or recurrence\n\nof a birth defect or of any potentially inherited or\n\ngenetically influenced condition. Such assessment may\n\ninvolve:\n\n(1) obtaining and analyzing a complete health history\n\nof an individual and the individual’s family,\n\n(2) review of pertinent medical records,\n\n(3) evaluation of the risks from exposure to possible\n\nmutagens or teratogens, or\n\n(4) discussion of genetic testing or other valuations\n\nto diagnose a condition or determine the carrier\n\nstatus of one or more family members,\n\nb. helping an individual, the individual’s family, a\n\nhealth care provider, or the public to:\n\n(1) appreciate the medical, psychological and social\n\nimplications of a disorder including its\n\nfeatures, variability, usual course, and\n\nmanagement options,\n\n(2) learn how genetic factors contribute to the\n\ndisorder and affect the chance for recurrence of\n\nthe condition in other family members,\n\n(3) understand available options for coping with,\n\npreventing or reducing the chance of occurrence\n\nor recurrence of a condition,\n\n(4) select the most appropriate, accurate and cost-\n\neffective methods of diagnosis, or\n\n(5) understand genetic or prenatal tests, coordinate\n\ntesting for inherited disorders, and interpret\n\ngenetic test results, and\n\nc. facilitating an individual’s or family’s:\n\n(1) exploration of the perception of risk and burden\n\nassociated with a disorder,\n\n(2) decision-making regarding testing or medical\n\ninterventions consistent with the individual’s or\n\nfamily’s beliefs, goals, needs, resources,\n\nculture and ethical or moral views, or\n\n(3) adjustment and adaptation to the condition or the\n\nindividual’s or family’s genetic risk by\n\naddressing needs for psychological, social and\n\nmedical support.","path":["OK Code","Title 63"],"source_url":"https://www.oklegislature.gov/OK_Statutes/CompleteTitles/os63.pdf","current_through":"2026-08-14","vintage":"open-us-law v2026.08, retrieved 2026-09-14","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T18:32:36Z","sha256":"4fd66f5d8458a7dfbbff2925ad63f5d547ec738eaf0febf6f55f11adb1333d58","source_id":"us-ok","stale":false,"prev":"us-ok/okla.-stat.-tit.-63-63-1-561","next":"us-ok/okla.-stat.-tit.-63-63-1-563"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
