Stat. tit. 63, § 63-1-745.13","heading":"Definitions","body":"As used in the Heartbeat Informed Consent Act:\n\n1. \"Abortion\" means the use or prescription of any instrument,\n\nmedicine, drug, or any other substance or device to cause the\n\npremature termination of the pregnancy of a woman known to be\n\npregnant with an intention other than to increase the probability of\n\na live birth, to preserve the life or health of the child after live\n\nbirth, or to remove a dead unborn child who died as the result of\n\nnatural causes in utero, accidental trauma, or a criminal assault on\n\nthe pregnant woman or her unborn child;\n\n2. \"Abortion provider\" means any person legally qualified to\n\nperform an abortion under state law;\n\n3. \"Embryonic or fetal heartbeat\" means embryonic or fetal\n\ncardiac activity or the steady and repetitive rhythmic contraction\n\nof the embryonic or fetal heart;\n\n4. \"Medical emergency\" means a condition that, in reasonable\n\nmedical judgment, so complicates the medical condition of the\n\npregnant woman that it necessitates the immediate abortion of her\n\npregnancy to avert her death or for which the delay will create\n\nserious risk of substantial and irreversible physical impairment of\n\na major bodily function, not including psychological or emotional\n\nconditions.
