Schedule II, III, IV and V controlled dangerous drugs have\n\nuseful and legitimate medical and scientific purposes and are\n\nnecessary to maintain the health and general welfare of the people\n\nof this state.\n\nB. The State of Oklahoma recognizes that principles of quality\n\nmedical practice dictate that the people of the State of Oklahoma\n\nhave access to appropriate and effective pain relief. The\n\nappropriate application of up-to-date knowledge and treatment\n\nmodalities can serve to improve the quality of life for those\n\npatients who suffer from pain as well as to reduce the morbidity,\n\nand costs associated with untreated or inappropriately treated pain.\n\nThe State of Oklahoma encourages physicians to view effective pain\n\nmanagement as a part of quality medical practice for all patients\n\nwith pain, acute or chronic. It is especially important for\n\npatients who experience pain as a result of terminal illness.\n\nC. If, in the judgment of the medical doctor or the doctor of\n\nosteopathic medicine, appropriate pain management warrants a high\n\ndosage of controlled dangerous drugs and the benefit of the relief\n\nexpected outweighs the risk of the high dosage, the medical doctor\n\nor doctor of osteopathic medicine may administer such a dosage, even\n\nif its use may increase the risk of death, so long as it is not also\n\nfurnished for the purpose of causing, or the purpose of assisting in\n\ncausing, death for any reason and so long as it falls within\n\npolicies, guidelines and rules of the Oklahoma State Board of\n\nMedical Licensure and Supervision or the Oklahoma State Board of\n\nOsteopathic Examiners.\n\nD. The Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and\n\nSupervision and the Oklahoma State Board of Osteopathic Examiners\n\nshall issue policies, guidelines or rules that ensure that\n\nphysicians who are engaged in the appropriate treatment of pain are\n\nnot subject to disciplinary action, and the Boards shall consider\n\npolicies and guidelines developed by national organizations with\n\nexpertise in pain medicine or in a medical discipline for this\n\npurpose.","path":["OK Code","Title 63"],"source_url":"https://www.oklegislature.gov/OK_Statutes/CompleteTitles/os63.pdf","current_through":"2026-08-14","vintage":"open-us-law v2026.08, retrieved 2026-09-14","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T18:32:36Z","sha256":"b2cdabc6f2007347b6aaff5bbd8e4c4b804133cab00065418bd7211ef97ca24a","source_id":"us-ok","stale":false,"prev":"us-ok/okla.-stat.-tit.-63-63-2-512","next":"us-ok/okla.-stat.-tit.-63-63-2-560"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
