Stat. tit. 63, § 63-2408","heading":"Definitions","body":"As used in the Oklahoma Legal Interpreter for the Deaf and Hard-\n\nof-Hearing Act:\n\n1. \"Deaf person\" or \"hard-of-hearing person\" means an\n\nindividual whose sense of hearing is nonfunctional for the ordinary\n\npurposes of life, and also may include a person who is deaf-blind,\n\nmeaning a deaf or hard-of-hearing person whose vision is also\n\nnonfunctional for the ordinary purposes of life;\n\n2. \"Qualified legal interpreter\" means:\n\na. an individual certified by the State Board of\n\nExaminers of Certified Courtroom Interpreters, or\n\nb. (1) an individual who possesses the knowledge and\n\nskills necessary to accurately and impartially\n\ninterpret spoken English into the equivalent\n\nvisual languages and modes, and currently\n\ncertified by the National Registry of\n\nInterpreters for the Deaf (RID) as one of the\n\nfollowing:\n\n(a) Specialist Certificate: Legal (SC:L). In\n\nthe event none are available, then\n\n(b) Another RID national certification,\n\nincluding, but not limited to, the National\n\nInterpreter Certification (NIC), Certificate\n\nof Interpretation and Certificate of\n\nTransliteration (CI \u0026 CT), or Comprehensive\n\nSkills Certificate (CSC),\n\n(2) an individual who possesses the knowledge and\n\nskills necessary to accurately and impartially\n\ntransliterate for a person who is oral or\n\nnonsigning using the equivalent oral or captioned\n\nmode, and is currently certified by the National\n\nRegistry of Interpreters for the Deaf as one of\n\nthe following:\n\n(a) Specialist Certificate: Legal (SC:L). In\n\nthe event none are available, then\n\n(b) Another RID national certification,\n\nincluding, but not limited to, the NIC,\n\nCertificate of Interpretation and\n\nCertificate of Transliteration (CI \u0026 CT), or\n\nComprehensive Skills Certificate (CSC),\n\n(c) In the event none are available, or at the\n\nrequest of the deaf individual, then a\n\nrecognized national or state certifying body\n\nof captionists, or a court reporter who is\n\nable to provide real time captioning, or\n\n(3) an individual who:\n\n(a) is deaf or hard-of-hearing who possesses the\n\nknowledge, skills, specialized training and\n\nexperience to enhance communication with\n\npersons who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and\n\nwhose communication modes are so unique that\n\nthey cannot be adequately assessed by\n\ninterpreters who are hearing, and\n\n(b) holds the following qualifications as a deaf\n\ninterpreter: National Registry of\n\nInterpreters for the Deaf, Certified Deaf\n\nInterpreter (CDI); in the event none are\n\navailable, then an Oklahoma QAST Deaf\n\nEvaluator may be utilized; and\n\n3. \"Appointing authority\" means any court, department, board,\n\ncommission, agency, licensing authority, political subdivision or\n\nmunicipality of the state.","path":["OK Code","Title 63"],"source_url":"https://www.oklegislature.gov/OK_Statutes/CompleteTitles/os63.pdf","current_through":"2026-08-14","vintage":"open-us-law v2026.08, retrieved 2026-09-14","retrieved_at":"2026-09-14T18:32:36Z","sha256":"abd331267612d54584f5953a34c915a1594618092b10c21748a346938ebfed21","source_id":"us-ok","stale":false,"prev":"us-ok/okla.-stat.-tit.-63-63-2407","next":"us-ok/okla.-stat.-tit.-63-63-2409"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
