Stat. tit. 63, § 63-92","heading":"Conditions for surrendering unclaimed bodies in government","body":"custody to Anatomical Board.\n\nIn the event that the body of any deceased person required to be\n\nburied or cremated at public expense shall enter into the custody of\n\na government official, such as a warden, superintendent,\n\nadministrator or officer of any state, county or municipal office,\n\nthe government official shall use reasonable effort to ascertain if\n\nthe deceased person has any relative, friend or other representative\n\nwho will assume charge of the body for burial or cremation at his or\n\nher expense. If such effort does not result in the discovery of a\n\nclaimant within twenty-four (24) hours after death, the government\n\nofficial may notify the Anatomical Board or the Board’s agent. The\n\ngovernment official shall, without fee or reward, surrender, except\n\nas otherwise specifically provided by law, such unclaimed body or\n\nbodies to the Anatomical Board’s agent and permit the Board or its\n\nagents to take and remove all such unclaimed bodies to be used for\n\nthe advancement of medical and anatomical sciences. The Anatomical\n\nBoard or the Board’s agent may accept or decline such unclaimed\n\nbodies, but no such body shall be delivered if:\n\n1. any relative, by blood or marriage, has previously claimed\n\nthe body for burial or cremation at the expense of such relative, in\n\nwhich event the body shall be surrendered to the claimant for burial\n\nor cremation;\n\n2. any government official is authorized pursuant to statutory\n\nlaw of this state to bury or cremate such body; or\n\n3. any representative of a fraternal society of which the\n\ndeceased was a member, representative of a charitable organization,\n\nor friend of the deceased has claimed the body for burial prior to\n\ndelivery to the Board’s agent.
