Upon receipt of notice of death of any person which under\n\nSection 931 et seq. of this title is subject to investigation, a\n\nrepresentative death investigator from the Office of the Chief\n\nMedical Examiner shall immediately initiate an investigation and\n\nshall document in detail, by the end of his or her assigned shift,\n\nall the known and available facts of the death scene in the\n\nelectronic database of the Chief Medical Examiner. Decedent\n\nspecimens, evidence, and photographs shall be sent to the Office of\n\nthe Chief Medical Examiner. The investigating official of the\n\nOffice of the Chief Medical Examiner may take charge of any object\n\nor writing found on or near the body which is deemed necessary for\n\nthe purpose of establishing the cause and/or manner of death.\n\nB. Upon conclusion of the investigation and determination that\n\nsuch objects or writings are no longer needed as evidence, the\n\nmedical examiner or the medical examiner’s designee may deliver them\n\nto the district attorney, law enforcement agency, or family for\n\ndisposition.\n\nC. The investigating medical examiner or the medical examiner’s\n\ndesignee shall have access at all times to any and all medical and\n\ndental records and history of the deceased including, but not\n\nlimited to, radiographs and medical records in the course of his or\n\nher official investigation to determine the cause and manner of\n\ndeath. Such records may not be released to any other person by the\n\nmedical examiner, and the custodians of such records shall incur no\n\nliability by reason of the release of such records to the medical\n\nexaminer.\n\nD. 1. The body of the deceased shall be turned over to the\n\nfuneral director designated by the person responsible for burial\n\nwithin twenty-four (24) hours of receipt of the decedent unless a\n\nlonger period is necessary to complete the required investigation.\n\n2.
