Stat. tit. 69, § 69-4020.1","heading":"Commission purpose","body":"Route 66 is one of the original highways within the U.S. Highway\n\nSystem. Officially, the numerical designation 66 was assigned to\n\nthe Chicago-to-Los Angeles route on November 11, 1926. From the\n\noutset, public road planners intended U.S. 66 to connect the main\n\nstreets of rural and urban communities along its course for the most\n\npractical of reasons; most small towns had no prior access to a\n\nmajor national thoroughfare. This was certainly true in Oklahoma.\n\nOklahoma's stretch of Route 66 runs from Miami through Tulsa and\n\nOklahoma City to Erick, passing through cities and towns of all\n\nsizes and vast expanses of rural landscape, before entering Texas\n\nand continuing on its way to Santa Monica, California. The Oklahoma\n\nRoute 66 Centennial Commission is established to plan, coordinate\n\nand implement programs and special events to celebrate the historic\n\nhighway's centennial in 2026 with the support of the Oklahoma\n\nHistorical Society.\n\nThe centennial is an opportunity to celebrate the important\n\nhistory of Route 66 in Oklahoma through commemorative, educational\n\nand community events, including programs and exhibits about the\n\nhistory of how local communities grew and changed with construction\n\nof the highway; the development of a modern transportation system;\n\nthe cultural impact of Route 66 both within the United States and\n\ninternationally; the portrayal of Route 66 in music, artwork and\n\nfolklore; and how we maintain the mystique and appeal of Route 66\n\nfor future generations.\n\nThe study, preservation and maintenance of Route-66-related\n\nresources has been a public/private partnership in Oklahoma for\n\ndecades. Government agencies, private organizations and individual\n\ncitizens have played critical roles in these efforts, and the\n\nOklahoma Route 66 Centennial Commission shall seek input from these\n\npartners and the general public as it develops plans for the\n\ncelebration and encourages their participation.\n\nThe significance of the Oklahoma stretch of Route 66 is\n\ndemonstrated through its status as both a state and a National\n\nScenic Byway and as a segment of the Route 66 National Historic\n\nTrail (legislation for NHT designation is pending in the U.S.\n\nCongress). Dozens of Oklahoma properties are related to Route 66,\n\nsuch as roadbed segments, bridges, commercial buildings, service\n\nstations and tourist attractions, and are listed in the National\n\nRegister of Historic Places.
