The State Department of Education shall develop and make\n\navailable to every public elementary school and high school in the\n\nState of Oklahoma, a curriculum that may be taught as a stand-alone\n\nunit of instruction, or may be integrated into one or more existing\n\ncourses of study, studying the events of the civil rights movement\n\nfrom 1954 to 1968, the natural law and natural rights principles\n\nthat the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., drew from that informed\n\nhis leadership of the civil rights movement, and the tactics and\n\nstrategies of nonviolent resistance that he championed in response\n\nto the Jim Crow laws of that era. This period in American history\n\nis known as the civil rights era because during this period reform-\n\nminded Americans organized to press for a rejection of the doctrine\n\nof \"separate but equal\" and to repeal the Jim Crow-era laws in parts\n\nof the United States that embodied that doctrine. One of the\n\nuniversal lessons of the civil rights era is that hatred on the\n\nbasis of immutable characteristics, including not just race or\n\nethnicity, but also characteristics such as nationality, religious\n\nbelief, disability, or sex, can overtake any nation or society,\n\nleading to profound injustice. To reinforce that lesson, such\n\ncurriculum shall include an additional unit of instruction studying\n\nother acts of discriminatory injustice, such as genocide, committed\n\nelsewhere around the globe. The study of this material is a\n\nreaffirmation of the commitment of the people of this state to\n\nreject bigotry, to champion equal protection under the law as a\n\nfoundational principle of our Republic, and to act in opposition to\n\ninjustice wherever it may occur.\n\nB.
