The State Department of Health shall develop guidelines,\n\nwith the assistance of the following entities, for the training of\n\nvolunteer diabetes care assistants:\n\n1. Oklahoma School Nurses Association;\n\n2. The American Diabetes Association;\n\n3. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International;\n\n4. The Oklahoma Nurses Association;\n\n5. The State Department of Education;\n\n6. Oklahoma Board of Nursing;\n\n7. Oklahoma Dietetic Association; and\n\n8. Cooperative Council of School Administrators.\n\nB. A school nurse or State Department of Health designee with\n\ntraining in diabetes shall coordinate the training of volunteer\n\ndiabetes care assistants.\n\nC. The training shall include instruction in:\n\n1. Recognizing the symptoms of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia;\n\n2. Understanding the proper action to take if the blood glucose\n\nlevels of a student with diabetes are outside the target ranges\n\nindicated by the diabetes medical management plan for the student;\n\n3. Understanding the details of the diabetes medical management\n\nplan of each student assigned to a volunteer diabetes care\n\nassistant;\n\n4. Performing finger sticks to check blood glucose levels,\n\nchecking urine ketone levels, and recording the results of those\n\nchecks;\n\n5. Properly administering insulin and glucagon and recording\n\nthe results of the administration;\n\n6. Recognizing complications that require seeking emergency\n\nassistance; and\n\n7. Understanding the recommended schedules and food intake for\n\nmeals and snacks for a student with diabetes, the effect of physical\n\nactivity on blood glucose levels, and the proper actions to be taken\n\nif the schedule of a student is disrupted.\n\nD. The volunteer diabetes care assistant shall annually\n\ndemonstrate competency in the training required by subsection C of\n\nthis section.\n\nE.
