The board of education of every school district in this\n\nstate may develop and implement a comprehensive program for\n\ncharacter education in any single grade or combination of grades,\n\nprekindergarten through twelfth. The character education program\n\nshall focus on development of character traits in students. The\n\nprogram of character education may include, but shall not be limited\n\nto, the voluntary reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag\n\nof the United States of America.\n\nB. The State Department of Education shall develop and make\n\navailable to all school districts through an Internet website, the\n\nfollowing:\n\n1. Technical assistance upon request of a school district;\n\n2. A list of approved research-based character education\n\nprograms, curricula, and materials which may be used by school\n\ndistricts;\n\n3. A character education honor roll that will recognize school\n\ndistricts that have successfully implemented a comprehensive school-\n\ndistrict-wide program of character education and will highlight the\n\npositive impacts the program has had on each school or school\n\ndistrict; and\n\n4. A character education reading list of books that may\n\ninclude, but is not limited to, books that illustrate models of good\n\ncharacter and books that relate to the development of good character\n\ntraits that may be used by schools in a character education program.\n\nC. Subject to the availability of funding, the State Board of\n\nEducation may award grants to ten school districts for the\n\nestablishment of pilot projects which align character education with\n\nthe state curriculum in reading, mathematics, science or social\n\nstudies and demonstrate how character education teaches life skills\n\nthat lead to career readiness. The amount of each grant shall be\n\nOne Thousand Dollars ($1,000.00). The projects shall be innovative\n\nprograms that will serve as models for other school districts.\n\nFunding may cover the cost of purchasing curriculum, materials, or\n\ntraining teachers. The Board shall determine pilot project criteria\n\nand establish a process for the consideration of proposals. The\n\nproposals for pilot projects shall be considered on a statewide\n\ncompetitive basis.
