Beginning with the 2017-2018 school year, the governing body\n\nof each public, private, magnet, charter or virtual charter school\n\nin this state (the school) is authorized to enter into an agreement\n\nwith private or public organizations for the purpose of creating\n\napprenticeship, internship and mentorship programs.\n\nApprenticeships, internships and mentorships may be available to\n\nhigh school sophomores age sixteen (16) or older, juniors and\n\nseniors as permitted by each school. The apprenticeship, internship\n\nor mentorship may fill the requirement of elective courses as the\n\nstudent's schedule permits. A student may not use the\n\napprenticeship, internship or mentorship to replace any other state\n\neducation requirement, except as provided for in subsection D of\n\nthis section.\n\nB. The governing body of each school shall have the authority\n\nto adopt policies regarding the creation of apprenticeships,\n\ninternships and mentorships that include the registration and\n\nqualifications for private or public organizations to participate in\n\nthe apprenticeship, internship or mentorship program.\n\nC. 1. The governing body of each school may obtain liability\n\ninsurance coverage to protect a student who participates in an\n\napprenticeship, internship or mentorship program authorized by this\n\nsection. The coverage authorized by this subsection shall be\n\nobtained from a reliable insurer authorized to do business in this\n\nstate and shall not exceed the amount that is deemed reasonably\n\nnecessary in the opinion of the governing body of each school.\n\n2. The governing body of a school may not directly or\n\nindirectly charge a student or the student's parent or legal\n\nguardian for the cost of providing insurance coverage pursuant to\n\nthis subsection.\n\n3. The failure of a governing body to obtain insurance coverage\n\nauthorized by this subsection or to obtain a specific amount of\n\ncoverage may not be construed as placing any legal liability on the\n\ngoverning body of the school.\n\nD.
