The State Department of Education and the State Department\n\nof Health shall facilitate the development of a physical fitness\n\nassessment software program customized for public schools in this\n\nstate that has the capability to track the five components of\n\nstudent health-related physical fitness, including:\n\n1. Aerobic capacity;\n\n2. Muscular strength;\n\n3. Muscular endurance;\n\n4. Flexibility; and\n\n5. A weight status assessment that includes measurement of\n\nheight and weight, calculation of body mass index (BMI) for age, and\n\nplotting of these measures on standard growth charts.\n\nThe software program shall have the capability of creating a\n\nconfidential individual student report for parents that includes an\n\nexplanation of the data. In addition, the software program shall be\n\ndeveloped and made accessible to school districts at no cost.\n\nB. The State Department of Health in consultation with the\n\nState Department of Education and the Governor’s Council on Physical\n\nFitness and Sports shall select at least fifteen elementary schools\n\nstatewide to pilot the software program during the 2008-2009 school\n\nyear. Pilot schools shall assess all participating students in\n\ngrades three, four and five. No school selected to participate in\n\nthe pilot program shall be required to utilize the software program.\n\nNo student shall be required to participate in the assessment if a\n\nparent or guardian of the student objects in writing. The purpose\n\nof the pilot shall be to:\n\n1. Evaluate methods for administering the physical fitness\n\nassessment to students;\n\n2. Evaluate methods for reporting to parents;\n\n3. Evaluate the software program to ensure that it provides for\n\nthe collection of data by school district in an efficient and cost-\n\neffective manner; and\n\n4.
