The purpose of the Oklahoma Charter Schools Act is to:\n\n1. Improve student learning;\n\n2. Increase learning opportunities for students;\n\n3. Encourage the use of different and innovative teaching\n\nmethods;\n\n4. Provide additional academic choices for parents and\n\nstudents;\n\n5. Require the measurement of student learning and create\n\ndifferent and innovative forms of measuring student learning;\n\n6. Establish new forms of accountability for schools; and\n\n7. Create new professional opportunities for teachers and\n\nadministrators including the opportunity to be responsible for the\n\nlearning program at the school site.\n\nB. The purpose of the Oklahoma Charter Schools Act is not to\n\nprovide a means by which to keep open a school that may otherwise be\n\nclosed. Applicants applying for a charter for a school which is to\n\nbe otherwise closed shall be required to prove that conversion to a\n\ncharter school fulfills the purposes of the act independent of\n\nclosing the school.
