The Oklahoma Legislature recognizes that public school\n\nparaprofessionals play an important role in educating school\n\nchildren and in assisting teachers. The Legislature further\n\nrecognizes the increasing role of public school paraprofessionals in\n\nthe school system in light of teacher shortages. To achieve the\n\ngoal of excellence for all persons who have an impact on student\n\nlearning, it is the intent of the Oklahoma Legislature that public\n\nschool paraprofessionals be afforded career opportunities and\n\neconomic incentives through a career development program.\n\nB. The State Board of Education shall adopt a program for the\n\ncareer development of public school paraprofessionals. The purpose\n\nof the program is to provide to public school paraprofessionals a\n\nsystem of career development which is based upon education and\n\ntraining advancement to encourage excellence among public school\n\nparaprofessionals. Nothing in this section shall be construed to\n\nrequire public school paraprofessionals to participate in the career\n\ndevelopment program.\n\nC. The board of education of a school district shall have\n\nauthority to extend an existing contract with a public school\n\nparaprofessional that provides for the payment of compensation for\n\nparaprofessional services rendered for the same time period during\n\nwhich the paraprofessional is also assigned to the school district\n\nfor practice teaching as a student teacher.\n\nD. For the purposes of this section, a public school\n\nparaprofessional is an employee of a school district whose position\n\nis either instructional in nature, or who delivers other direct\n\nservices to students and/or their parents.
