Stat. tit. 70, § 70-6-189.1","heading":"Certification of mathematics teachers – Middle level","body":"certification or endorsement – Required curriculum of professional\n\ndevelopment institutes.\n\nA. Beginning July 1, 2000, no school district shall employ any\n\nteacher to teach mathematics in grades seven or eight, unless the\n\nteacher is certified to teach middle or secondary level mathematics\n\nor has received middle level endorsement pursuant to subsection B of\n\nthis section.\n\nB. Any teacher who became certified to teach prior to September\n\n1, 1999, does not have middle or secondary level certification in\n\nmathematics, and is serving in a school as a mathematics teacher for\n\ngrades seven or eight shall be required to obtain middle level\n\ncertification or middle level endorsement before September 1, 2003.\n\nFor such teachers, middle level certification or middle level\n\nendorsement may be obtained as follows:\n\n1. Middle level mathematics certification – A teacher may\n\nobtain middle level certification by successfully completing the\n\nappropriate Oklahoma Subject Area Test for middle level mathematics\n\nadministered by the Oklahoma Commission for Teacher Preparation.\n\nThe teacher shall not be required to take the Oklahoma Professional\n\nTeacher Examination for secondary students administered by the\n\nOklahoma Commission for Teacher Preparation. A teacher granted\n\nmiddle level certification pursuant to this paragraph shall be\n\nentitled to teach mathematics in grades seven and eight for high\n\nschool graduation credit; and\n\n2. Middle level endorsement – A teacher may obtain a middle\n\nlevel endorsement by successfully completing a professional\n\ndevelopment institute in middle level mathematics developed and\n\nadministered by the Oklahoma Commission for Teacher Preparation.\n\nAny professional development institute developed pursuant to this\n\nparagraph shall meet the criteria as established in subsection H of\n\nthis section. A teacher granted middle level endorsement pursuant\n\nto this paragraph shall not be entitled to teach mathematics for\n\nhigh school graduation credit.\n\nC. Any teacher serving in a school as a mathematics teacher for\n\ngrade six may obtain middle level endorsement by successfully\n\ncompleting a professional development institute in middle level\n\nmathematics developed pursuant to this section. Such teacher shall\n\nbe eligible to participate in a professional development institute\n\nin middle level mathematics developed and administered by the\n\nOklahoma Commission for Teacher Preparation one time free of charge.\n\nD. Any teacher seeking middle level certification or middle\n\nlevel endorsement pursuant to subsection B of this section shall be\n\neligible to take the Oklahoma Subject Area Test in middle level\n\nmathematics one time free of charge after July 1, 2000, or\n\nparticipate in a professional development institute in middle level\n\nmathematics developed and administered by the Oklahoma Commission\n\nfor Teacher Preparation one time free of charge after July 1, 2000.\n\nE. A teacher who is granted middle level certification in\n\nmathematics, pursuant to subsection B of this section, may teach\n\ngrade nine only if the teacher successfully completes the Oklahoma\n\nProfessional Teacher Examination for secondary students.\n\nF. A teacher who is granted middle level endorsement pursuant\n\nto subsection B or C of this section may teach mathematics courses\n\nin grades seven or eight for high school credit only if the teacher\n\nhas completed a minimum of twenty-four college credit semester hours\n\nof mathematics as specified by the State Department of Education.\n\nG. Any teacher who became certified to teach prior to September\n\n1, 1999, did not have middle or secondary level certification in\n\nmathematics and successfully completed the appropriate Oklahoma\n\nSubject Area Test for middle level mathematics between July 1, 1999,\n\nand July 1, 2000, shall be granted a middle level certificate\n\npursuant to subsection B of this section.\n\nH. 1. Any professional development institute in middle level\nied to teach prior to September\n\n1, 1999, did not have middle or secondary level certification in\n\nmathematics and successfully completed the appropriate Oklahoma\n\nSubject Area Test for middle level mathematics between July 1, 1999,\n\nand July 1, 2000, shall be granted a middle level certificate\n\npursuant to subsection B of this section.\n\nH. 1. Any professional development institute in middle level\n\nmathematics developed pursuant to this section and administered by\n\nthe Oklahoma Commission for Teacher Preparation shall:\n\na. consist of a minimum of thirty (30) clock hours,\n\nb. be competency based,\n\nc. emphasize effective learning practices,\n\nd. require collaboration among participants, and\n\ne. require each participant to prepare a work product\n\nwhich can be utilized in the classroom by the\n\nparticipant.\n\n2. Any professional development institute in middle level\n\nmathematics developed pursuant to this section and administered by\n\nthe Oklahoma Commission for Teacher Preparation shall be chosen\n\nthrough a competitive bid process, be reviewed by a professional\n\ndevelopment committee and other constituencies, and be subject to\n\npeer review. Invitations to bid for a professional development\n\ninstitute shall be open to any public or private entity.\n\nI.
