{"data":{"id":"us-pa/44-pa.c.s.-7178","jurisdiction":"us-pa","citation":"44 Pa.C.S. § 7178","heading":"Failure to serve in a township.","body":"(a) Scope of section.--This section applies to an individual in a township if all of the following circumstances exist:\n(1) The individual is elected or appointed a constable.\n(2) The individual has a freehold estate worth at least $1,000.\n(3) The individual fails to:\n(i) serve; or\n(ii) appoint a deputy to serve.\n(b) Fine.--Except as set forth in subsection (c), an individual under subsection (a) shall be fined $40 for the use of the appropriate township.\n(c) Exception.--Subsection (b) shall not apply to an individual who:\n(1) has served personally or by deputy in the office of constable of the same township within 15 years of election or appointment; or\n(2) has paid a fine under subsection (b) within 15 years of election or appointment.","path":["Title 44 - LAW AND JUSTICE","PART IV OTHER OFFICERS AND OFFICIALS","CHAPTER 71 CONSTABLES","SUBCHAPTER H PENALTIES AND REMEDIES"],"source_url":"https://www.palegis.us/statutes/consolidated/view-statute?txtType=HTM\u0026ttl=44\u0026div=0\u0026chpt=71\u0026sctn=78\u0026subsctn=0","current_through":"2026-07-29 (Statute Update stamp, 44 Pa.C.S.)","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-02T16:33:23Z","sha256":"574d65e719bc7d53017ec5e773c468a0ca70eaba3dd8f328441cd4cd650e31a6","source_id":"us-pa","stale":false,"prev":"us-pa/44-pa.c.s.-7177","next":"us-pa/44-pa.c.s.-7201"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
