{"data":{"id":"us-pa/75-pa.c.s.-4941","jurisdiction":"us-pa","citation":"75 Pa.C.S. § 4941","heading":"Maximum gross weight of vehicles.","body":"(a) General rule.--Except as provided for in subsection (d), no vehicle shall, when operated upon a highway, have a gross weight exceeding 80,000 pounds, and no combination driven upon a highway shall have a gross weight exceeding 80,000 pounds, or the applicable weight set as forth in subsection (b) or (c), whichever is less.\n(b) Combination of vehicles.--No combination shall, when operated upon a highway, have a gross weight exceeding the following:\nCombination of Vehicles Maximum Gross Weight In Pounds\nTwo-axle truck tractor \u0026 single-axle semitrailer 58,400\nTwo-axle truck tractor \u0026 two-axle semitrailer 73,280\nThree-axle truck tractor \u0026 single-axle semitrailer 73,280\nTwo-axle truck \u0026 two-axle trailer 73,280\n(c) Motor vehicles.--No motor vehicle when operated upon a highway shall have a gross weight exceeding the following specified maximum gross weight for the following described motor vehicles:\nMaximum Gross Weight In Pounds\nTwo-axle motor vehicle 38,000\nThree-axle motor vehicle 58,400\nFour-axle motor vehicle 73,280\nFive-axle motor vehicle 73,280\nSix-axle motor vehicle 77,000\nSeven-axle motor vehicle 80,000\n(d) Natural gas and electric vehicles.--\n(1) Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a vehicle that is operated by an engine fueled primarily by compressed or liquefied natural gas or powered primarily by means of electric battery power may exceed the gross vehicle weight limits imposed under this section by an amount, not to exceed a maximum of 2,000 pounds, that is equal to the difference between the weight of the vehicle attributable to the natural gas tank and fueling system or the battery or battery pack carried by the vehicle and the weight of a comparable diesel tank and fueling system.\n(2) The weight exemption provided for under this subsection shall apply to all State highways and interstate highways as provided by the exemption permitted under 23 U.S.C. § 127 (relating to vehicle weight limitations-Interstate System).","path":["Title 75 - VEHICLES","PART IV VEHICLE CHARACTERISTICS","CHAPTER 49 SIZE, WEIGHT AND LOAD","SUBCHAPTER C MAXIMUM WEIGHTS OF VEHICLES"],"source_url":"https://www.palegis.us/statutes/consolidated/view-statute?txtType=HTM\u0026ttl=75\u0026div=0\u0026chpt=49\u0026sctn=41\u0026subsctn=0","current_through":"2026-08-31 (Statute Update stamp, 75 Pa.C.S.)","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-02T16:35:49Z","sha256":"fd75322b46607c800dc94f994378ed04e7674eb631506badf11e23d02a9cd772","source_id":"us-pa","stale":false,"prev":"us-pa/75-pa.c.s.-4925","next":"us-pa/75-pa.c.s.-4942"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
