Laws § 23-1.8-5","heading":"Communication access services.","body":"A state employee who is approved by the commission for the deaf and hard of hearing as an interpreter or a communication access realtime translation (CART) provider may be employed by the commission or by other state agencies as long as the interpreter and CART services:\n(1) Are provided outside of the normal working hours of the employee in order to comply with federal, state, and local laws;\n(2) The services are not required as part of the regular duties of the employee;\n(3) The employee does not participate in or have official responsibility for the financial management of the contracting agency;\n(4) The employee is compensated for no more than four (4) hours in any day in which the employee is otherwise compensated by the state of Rhode Island; and\n(5) The head of the contracting agency files with the state ethics commission a written certification that there is a critical need for the services of the employee.","path":["Title 23 Health and Safety","Chapter 1.8 Commission on the Deaf and Hard-Of-Hearing"],"source_url":"https://webserver.rilegislature.gov/Statutes/TITLE23/23-1.8/23-1.8-5.htm","current_through":"site files published 2025-08-13","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T19:56:36Z","sha256":"a3d74b436b7682fecf671641de03c2772d0436d0d4212397a0c9452e9be5f349","source_id":"us-ri","stale":true,"prev":"us-ri/r.i.-gen.-laws-23-1.8-4","next":"us-ri/r.i.-gen.-laws-23-1.9-1-23-1.9-2"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
