Laws § 23-97-3","heading":"Assessment mechanisms.","body":"An assessment mechanism to conduct an eye assessment or to generate a prescription for contact lenses or visual aid glasses in Rhode Island shall:\n(1) Provide synchronous or asynchronous interaction between the patient and the provider;\n(2) Collect the patient’s medical history, previous prescription for corrective eyewear, and length of time since the patient’s most recent in-person comprehensive eye health examination;\n(3) Disclose to patients and require acceptance in advance as a term of use that:\n(i) This assessment is not a replacement of an in-person comprehensive eye health examination;\n(ii) This assessment cannot be used to generate an initial prescription for contact lenses or a follow-up or first renewal of the initial prescription;\n(iii) This assessment may only be used if the patient has had an in-person comprehensive eye health examination within the previous twenty-four (24) months if the patient is conducting an eye assessment or receiving a prescription for visual aid glasses; and\n(iv) The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises contact lens wearers to visit an eye doctor one time a year or more often if needed.","path":["Title 23 Health and Safety","Chapter 97 Consumer Protection in Eye Care Act"],"source_url":"https://webserver.rilegislature.gov/Statutes/TITLE23/23-97/23-97-3.htm","current_through":"site files published 2025-08-13","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T19:57:12Z","sha256":"8581e682972274743c55ad7f9e5cba623a12650f571f5e2b903f11b0afe8f097","source_id":"us-ri","stale":true,"prev":"us-ri/r.i.-gen.-laws-23-97-2","next":"us-ri/r.i.-gen.-laws-23-97-4"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
