Laws § 28-30-24","heading":"Domestic partner — Definition.","body":"For purposes of this chapter, “domestic partner” shall be defined as a person who, prior to the decedent’s death, was in an exclusive, intimate, and committed relationship with the decedent, and who certifies by affidavit that their relationship met the following qualifications:\n(1) Both partners were at least eighteen (18) years of age and were mentally competent to contract;\n(2) Neither partner was married to anyone else;\n(3) Partners were not related by blood to a degree which would prohibit marriage in the state of Rhode Island;\n(4) Partners resided together and had resided together for at least one year at the time of death; and\n(5) Partners were financially interdependent as evidenced by at least two (2) of the following:\n(i) Domestic partnership agreement or relationship contract;\n(ii) Joint mortgage or joint ownership of primary residence;\n(iii) Two (2) of: (A) Joint ownership of motor vehicle; (B) Joint checking account; (C) Joint credit account; (D) Joint lease; and/or\n(iv) The domestic partner had been designated as a beneficiary for the decedent’s will, retirement contract, or life insurance.","path":["Title 28 Labor and Labor Relations","Chapter 30 Workers’ Compensation Court"],"source_url":"https://webserver.rilegislature.gov/Statutes/TITLE28/28-30/28-30-24.htm","current_through":"site files published 2025-08-13","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T19:57:56Z","sha256":"577f279edeb1492125a20eee3889c914396ac134ca3c1eb04332ea5bd7e35882","source_id":"us-ri","stale":true,"prev":"us-ri/r.i.-gen.-laws-28-30-23","next":"us-ri/r.i.-gen.-laws-28-30-25"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
