Laws § 30-22-6","heading":"Domestic partner defined.","body":"For purposes of this chapter, “domestic partner” shall be defined as a person who, prior to the decedent’s death, was in an exclusive, intimate, and committed relationship with the decedent, and who certifies, by affidavit, that their relationship met the following qualifications:\n(1) Both partners were at least eighteen (18) years of age and were mentally competent to contract;\n(2) Neither partner was married to anyone else;\n(3) Partners were not related by blood to a degree that would prohibit marriage in the state of Rhode Island;\n(4) Partners resided together and had resided together for at least one year at the time of death; and\n(5) Partners were financially interdependent as evidenced by at least two (2) of the following:\n(i) Domestic partnership agreement or relationship contract;\n(ii) Joint mortgage or joint ownership of primary residence;\n(iii) Two (2) of: (A) joint ownership of motor vehicle; (B) joint checking account; (C) joint credit account; (D) joint lease; and/or\n(iv) The domestic partner had been designated as a beneficiary for the decedent’s will, retirement contract, or life insurance.","path":["Title 30 Military Affairs and Defense","Chapter 22 Extension of Veterans’ Benefits"],"source_url":"https://webserver.rilegislature.gov/Statutes/TITLE30/30-22/30-22-6.htm","current_through":"site files published 2025-08-13","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T19:58:11Z","sha256":"fe62acd7237e6784f239b04c77ac3a364ba370f409badafc4faa0fa4f225475f","source_id":"us-ri","stale":true,"prev":"us-ri/r.i.-gen.-laws-30-22-5","next":"us-ri/r.i.-gen.-laws-30-23-1"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
