Laws § 31-15-4","heading":"Overtaking on left.","body":"The following rules shall govern the overtaking and passing of vehicles proceeding in the same direction, subject to those limitations, exceptions, and special rules stated in this chapter:\n(1) The driver of a vehicle overtaking another vehicle proceeding in the same direction shall give a timely, audible signal and shall pass to the left at a safe distance and shall not again drive to the right side of the roadway until safely clear of the overtaken vehicle.\n(2) Except when overtaking and passing on the right is permitted, the driver of an overtaken vehicle shall give way to the right in favor of the overtaking vehicle on audible signal and shall not increase the speed of his or her vehicle until completely passed by the overtaking vehicle.\n(3) Violations of this section are subject to fines enumerated in § 31-41.1-4.","path":["Title 31 Motor and Other Vehicles","Chapter 15 Passing, Use of Lanes, and Rules of the Road"],"source_url":"https://webserver.rilegislature.gov/Statutes/TITLE31/31-15/31-15-4.htm","current_through":"site files published 2025-08-13","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T19:58:20Z","sha256":"8949b98bbcbc30f37cb4e785451ab03f9cc0d5c603404ddb4d693d8b0928af44","source_id":"us-ri","stale":true,"prev":"us-ri/r.i.-gen.-laws-31-15-3","next":"us-ri/r.i.-gen.-laws-31-15-5"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
