Laws § 31-27-2.4","heading":"Driving while in possession of controlled substances.","body":"(a) In addition to any other penalty prescribed by law, whoever operates any motor vehicle while knowingly having in the motor vehicle or in his or her possession, a controlled substance, as defined in § 21-28-1.02, except for possession of up to one ounce (1 oz.) of marijuana, shall have his or her license suspended for a period of six (6) months.\n(b) This section shall not apply to any person who lawfully possesses a controlled substance, as defined in § 21-28-1.02, as a direct result and pursuant to a valid prescription from a licensed medical practitioner, or as otherwise authorized by chapter 28 of title 21.","path":["Title 31 Motor and Other Vehicles","Chapter 27 Motor Vehicle Offenses"],"source_url":"https://webserver.rilegislature.gov/Statutes/TITLE31/31-27/31-27-2.4.htm","current_through":"site files published 2025-08-13","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T19:58:25Z","sha256":"5922ddfd8f5ecf7137d543862615c2ed6328a646e2d1d95c4465101649636ebd","source_id":"us-ri","stale":true,"prev":"us-ri/r.i.-gen.-laws-31-27-2.3","next":"us-ri/r.i.-gen.-laws-31-27-2.5"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
