Laws § 39-28-2","heading":"Definitions.","body":"For the purpose of this chapter, the following terms shall have the following meanings:\n(1) “Voice over internet protocol service” or “VoIP service” means any service that:\n(i) Enables real-time, two-way voice communications that originate from or terminate at the user’s location in internet protocol or any successor protocol;\n(ii) Uses a broadband connection from the user’s location; and\n(iii) Permits users generally to receive calls that originate on the public switched telephone network and to terminate calls to the public switched telephone network.\n(2) “Internet protocol-enabled service” or “IP-enabled service” means any service, capability, functionality, or application provided, except that as provided in subsection (1), using internet protocol, or any successor protocol, that enables an end-user to send or receive a communication in internet protocol format or any successor format.","path":["Title 39 Public Utilities and Carriers","Chapter 28 Broadband Deployment and Investment Act"],"source_url":"https://webserver.rilegislature.gov/Statutes/TITLE39/39-28/39-28-2.htm","current_through":"site files published 2025-08-13","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T19:59:22Z","sha256":"8f79e1edefcae1e61f23a866bdeb8c415ee958ebe874b0b89281a69d4346593d","source_id":"us-ri","stale":true,"prev":"us-ri/r.i.-gen.-laws-39-28-1","next":"us-ri/r.i.-gen.-laws-39-28-3"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
