Laws § 40.1-1-8.1","heading":"“Developmental disability” defined.","body":"The term “developmental disability” means a severe, chronic disability of a person that:\n(1) Is attributable to a mental or physical impairment or combination of mental and physical impairments;\n(2) Is manifested before the person attains age twenty-two (22);\n(3) Is likely to continue indefinitely;\n(4) Results in substantial functional limitations in three (3) or more of the following areas of major life activity:\n(i) Self-care;\n(ii) Receptive and expressive language;\n(iii) Learning;\n(iv) Mobility;\n(v) Self-direction;\n(vi) Capacity for independent living; and\n(vii) Economic self-sufficiency; and\n(5) Reflects the person’s need for a combination and sequence of special, interdisciplinary, or generic care, treatment, or other services that are of lifelong or extended duration and are individually planned and coordinated.","path":["Title 40.1 Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals","Chapter 1 Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals"],"source_url":"https://webserver.rilegislature.gov/Statutes/TITLE40.1/40.1-1/40.1-1-8.1.htm","current_through":"site files published 2025-08-13","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T19:59:30Z","sha256":"4e77e121c44755e14576358a8eb9e8e5515a357e911a3c5e55dab37040d8910f","source_id":"us-ri","stale":true,"prev":"us-ri/r.i.-gen.-laws-40.1-1-8","next":"us-ri/r.i.-gen.-laws-40.1-1-9"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
