Laws § 42-4.2-1","heading":"Definition of category one memorial item.","body":"(a) As used in this chapter, a category one memorial item shall include a structure, sculpture, inscription, or icon, or similar item, which meets the following criteria:\n(1) Has attained a secular traditional, cultural, or community recognition and/or value;\n(2) Is located on property that is owned by either the state, a city or town, or any instrumentality thereof;\n(3) Was in existence prior to January 1, 2012; and\n(4) Is designated as a category one memorial pursuant to § 42-4.2-2.\n(b) A memorial may, but does not need to be, related to military affairs in order to be designated as a category one memorial.\n(c) The potential identification of an item or the item having recognizable identification with a known or established religion shall not exclude the item from being designated as a category one memorial item, so long as the provisions of subsection (a) are met.","path":["Title 42 State Affairs and Government","Chapter 4.2 Category One Memorial Items"],"source_url":"https://webserver.rilegislature.gov/Statutes/TITLE42/42-4.2/42-4.2-1.htm","current_through":"site files published 2025-08-13","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T19:59:38Z","sha256":"53a22fde87eaabb201cc1ca7ee28797230edf2f589a21140d8183f2255caaa02","source_id":"us-ri","stale":true,"prev":"us-ri/r.i.-gen.-laws-42-4.1-2","next":"us-ri/r.i.-gen.-laws-42-4.2-2"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
