Laws § 5-19.1-24","heading":"Emergency prescription refill.","body":"In the event a pharmacist receives a request for a prescription refill, and the pharmacist is unable to readily obtain refill authorization from the prescriber, the pharmacist may dispense a one-time emergency refill of up to a seventy-two-hour (72) supply of the prescribed medication, provided that:\n(1) The prescription is not for a drug in Schedule II appearing in chapter 28 of title 21;\n(2) The medication is essential to the maintenance of life or to the continuation of therapy of a chronic condition;\n(3) In the pharmacist’s professional judgment, the interruption of therapy might reasonably produce undesirable health consequences or may cause physical or mental discomfort; and\n(4) The dispensing pharmacist notifies the prescriber of the emergency dispensing within a reasonable time after the dispensing.","path":["Title 5 Businesses and Professions","Chapter 19.1 Pharmacies"],"source_url":"https://webserver.rilegislature.gov/Statutes/TITLE5/5-19.1/5-19.1-24.htm","current_through":"site files published 2025-08-13","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T14:20:54Z","sha256":"f34b2100346d3da36412fa82640f9676a695e23dac3a2f3fe9e62297bbe61a57","source_id":"us-ri","stale":true,"prev":"us-ri/r.i.-gen.-laws-5-19.1-23","next":"us-ri/r.i.-gen.-laws-5-19.1-25"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
