Laws § 9-9-1.1","heading":"Qualifications of jurors.","body":"(a) A person is qualified to serve as a juror if the person is:\n(1) A citizen of the United States;\n(2) A resident of Rhode Island who either:\n(i) Resides in the county where the person is registered to vote; or\n(ii) Is licensed to operate a motor vehicle within this state; or\n(iii) Possesses a Rhode Island identification card issued pursuant to the provisions of §§ 3-8-6 and 3-8-6.1; or\n(iv) Is an individual filing a state income tax return; or\n(v) Is an individual recipient of unemployment compensation;\n(3) At least 18 years of age;\n(4) Able to understand and participate in the court proceedings; and\n(5) Physically and mentally capable of performing in a reasonable manner the duties of a juror.\n(b) No person shall be allowed to serve as a juror if he or she has been lawfully adjudicated to be non compos mentis, or is serving a sentence of confinement at a correctional facility as a consequence of a felony conviction.\n(c) [Deleted by P.L. 2023, ch. 367, § 1 and P.L. 2023, ch. 368, § 1.]\n(d) Notwithstanding subdivisions (a)(4) and (5), a person with a disability shall not be ineligible to serve as a juror solely on the basis of the person’s disability, and if that person meets the above requirements, with reasonable accommodations if necessary, the person shall be deemed a qualified juror.\n(e) Nothing in this section shall prevent the court from disqualifying a prospective juror because the prospective juror lacks a faculty or has a disability which will prevent the potential juror from being a competent juror in a particular case.\n(f) Nothing in this section shall be construed to limit a party’s right to preemptorially challenge jurors.","path":["Title 9 Courts and Civil Procedure — Procedure Generally","Chapter 9 Jury Lists"],"source_url":"https://webserver.rilegislature.gov/Statutes/TITLE9/9-9/9-9-1.1.htm","current_through":"site files published 2025-08-13","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-05T19:54:59Z","sha256":"7a3808d0afd3ef620cb52e8963ccfd838407c9cdc8b2cca2a5c293f58b76f716","source_id":"us-ri","stale":true,"prev":"us-ri/r.i.-gen.-laws-9-9-1","next":"us-ri/r.i.-gen.-laws-9-9-1.2"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
