Code Ann. § 16-17-722","heading":"Filing of false police reports; knowledge; offense; penalties.","body":"(A) It is unlawful for a person to knowingly file a false police report.\n(B) A person who violates subsection (A) by falsely reporting a felony is guilty of a felony and upon conviction must be imprisoned for not more than five years or fined not more than one thousand dollars, or both.\n(C) A person who violates subsection (A) by falsely reporting a misdemeanor is guilty of a misdemeanor and must be imprisoned not more than thirty days or fined not more than five hundred dollars, or both.\n(D) In imposing a sentence under this section, the judge may require the offender to pay restitution to the investigating agency to offset costs incurred in investigating the false police report.","path":["Title 16 - CRIMES AND OFFENSES","CHAPTER 17 Offenses Against Public Policy","ARTICLE 7 Miscellaneous Offenses"],"source_url":"https://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/t16c017.php","current_through":"2025 Session of the General Assembly","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-02T06:44:54Z","sha256":"178aee7c1f525c7da8fdbe56eab7af38425dd7c5f9f40d7cb30f94ea877bbaa8","source_id":"us-sc","stale":false,"prev":"us-sc/s.c.-code-ann.-16-17-720","next":"us-sc/s.c.-code-ann.-16-17-725"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
