Code Ann. § 56-1-720","heading":"Point system established; schedule of points for violations.","body":"There is established a point system for the evaluation of the operating record of persons to whom a license to operate motor vehicles has been granted and for the determination of the continuing qualifications of these persons for the privileges granted by the license to operate motor vehicles. The system shall have as its basic element a graduated scale of points assigning relative values to the various violations in accordance with the following schedule:\nVIOLATION\tPOINTS\nReckless driving\t6\nPassing stopped school bus\t6\nHit-and-run, property damages only\t6\nDriving too fast for conditions, or speeding:\n(1)\tNo more than 10 m.p.h. above the posted limits\t2\n(2)\tMore than 10 m.p.h. but less than 25 m.p.h. above the posted limits\t4\n(3)\t25 m.p.h. or above the posted limits\t6\nDisobedience of any official traffic control device\t4\nDisobedience to officer directing traffic\t4\nFailing to yield right-of-way\t4\nDriving on wrong side of road\t4\nPassing unlawfully\t4\nTurning unlawfully\t4\nDriving through or within safety zone\t4\nShifting lanes without safety precaution\t2\nImproper dangerous parking\t2\nFollowing too closely\t4\nFailing to dim lights\t2\nOperating with improper lights\t2\nOperating with improper brakes\t4\nDistracted driving (second or subsequent offense)\t2\nOperating a vehicle in unsafe condition\t2\nDriving in improper lane\t2\nImproper backing\t2\nEndangerment of a highway worker, no injury\t2\nEndangerment of a highway worker, injury results\t4","path":["Title 56 - MOTOR VEHICLES","CHAPTER 1 Driver's License","ARTICLE 3 Point System for Evaluating Operating Records of Drivers"],"source_url":"https://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/t56c001.php","current_through":"2025 Session of the General Assembly","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-02T07:52:19Z","sha256":"8fe4e74636b2428832dc5549bc67c03cb0915be50812c733280c6d8f3eee3b25","source_id":"us-sc","stale":false,"prev":"us-sc/s.c.-code-ann.-56-1-710","next":"us-sc/s.c.-code-ann.-56-1-730"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
