Code Ann. § 56-5-3170","heading":"Pedestrians prohibited on freeways.","body":"(A) No person as a pedestrian, unless otherwise directed by a law enforcement officer, shall occupy any space within the limits of the roadway and shoulder of the main facility of a freeway, except to perform public works or official duties, as a result of an emergency caused by an accident or breakdown of a motor vehicle, or to obtain assistance.\nThe prohibitions imposed by this subsection on the use of freeways do not apply to service roads alongside the highways.\n(B) A person who violates the provisions of this section is guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, must be fined not more than one hundred dollars or imprisoned not more than thirty days.","path":["Title 56 - MOTOR VEHICLES","CHAPTER 5 Uniform Act Regulating Traffic on Highways","ARTICLE 25 Pedestrians; Rights and Duties"],"source_url":"https://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/t56c005.php","current_through":"2025 Session of the General Assembly","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-02T07:52:34Z","sha256":"361f9d0d3f5272f36856c3e814e2bf5a1e2cc2cd82cc0826b574ef905466240e","source_id":"us-sc","stale":false,"prev":"us-sc/s.c.-code-ann.-56-5-3160","next":"us-sc/s.c.-code-ann.-56-5-3180"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
