{"data":{"id":"us-ut/utah-code-17-72-401","jurisdiction":"us-ut","citation":"Utah Code § 17-72-401","heading":"County jails -- Sheriff as keeper -- Contracting with private contractor.","body":"(1) The county jail shall be kept by the sheriff and shall be used for:\n(a) the detention of an individual committed to jail to secure the individual's attendance as a witness in a criminal case;\n(b) the detention of prisoners charged with crime and committed for trial;\n(c) the confinement of prisoners committed for contempt, or upon civil process, or by other authority of law; and\n(d) the confinement of inmates sentenced to imprisonment upon conviction of crime.\n(2) If the county executive contracts with a private contractor to manage, maintain, operate, or construct county jail facilities, the sheriff shall perform whatever obligations are imposed upon the sheriff by that contract.","path":["Title 17 Counties","Chapter 17-72 County Sheriff","Part 17-72-4 County Jails"],"source_url":"https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title17/Chapter72/17-72-S401.html","current_through":"2026 General Session","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-03T11:34:33Z","sha256":"201dbb0ff9d665522c4ad63a13d0609f8cfd5c2e5d88aa36a924d517a674aee8","source_id":"us-ut","stale":false,"prev":"us-ut/utah-code-17-72-305","next":"us-ut/utah-code-17-72-402"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
