{"data":{"id":"us-ut/utah-code-23a-5-314","jurisdiction":"us-ut","citation":"Utah Code § 23A-5-314","heading":"Waste of wildlife unlawful -- Criminal penalty.","body":"(1) A person may not waste or permit to be wasted protected wildlife or a part of protected wildlife except as otherwise provided:\n(a) in this title;\n(b) by rule made by the Wildlife Board under this title and in accordance with Title 63G, Chapter 3, Utah Administrative Rulemaking Act; or\n(c) by an order or proclamation.\n(2) A person who violates this section is subject to the penalty provided in Section 23A-5-301 except as provided in Subsection (3).\n(3)\n(a) A licensed hunter who legally kills a big game animal, but abandons the big game animal is subject to a class A misdemeanor.\n(b) A big game animal is considered abandoned if the licensed hunter acts knowingly, intentionally, or recklessly, and:\n(i) the big game animal is not tagged as required by Section 23A-4-709;\n(ii) the big game animal is wasted;\n(iii) the licensed hunter continues to hunt the same species while exercising the benefits of the issued tag; or\n(iv) no attempt or minimal attempt is made to salvage the big game animal.","path":["Title 23A Wildlife Resources Act","Chapter 23A-5 Enforcement and Violations","Part 23A-5-3 Violations"],"source_url":"https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title23A/Chapter5/23A-5-S314.html","current_through":"2026 General Session","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-03T11:34:33Z","sha256":"46d39483afa5b220b81f6b496ba006e1b0ae4585c2d41d62251deb052ac7c97b","source_id":"us-ut","stale":false,"prev":"us-ut/utah-code-23a-5-313","next":"us-ut/utah-code-23a-5-315"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
