{"data":{"id":"us-ut/utah-code-41-1a-704","jurisdiction":"us-ut","citation":"Utah Code § 41-1a-704","heading":"Transfer by operation of law.","body":"(1) Except as provided under Subsection (2), if the title or interest of an owner in or to a registered vehicle passes to another person other than by voluntary transfer:\n(a) the registration of the vehicle expires; and\n(b) the vehicle may not be operated upon a highway until the person entitled to possession of the vehicle applies for and obtains a valid registration or temporary permit.\n(2)\n(a) A vehicle under Subsection (1) may be operated on the highways by the person entitled to its possession or his legal representative, for a distance not exceeding 75 miles, upon displaying on the vehicle the license plate or plates issued to the former owner.\n(b) If title is vested in a person holding a lien or encumbrance on the vehicle, the new title holder may apply to the Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division for special plates issued under Section 41-3-505 to transporters and may operate the repossessed vehicle under the special plate for the purposes of:\n(i) transporting the vehicle to a garage or warehouse; or\n(ii) demonstrating the vehicle for sale.\n(3) A violation of this section is an infraction.","path":["Title 41 Motor Vehicles","Chapter 41-1a Motor Vehicle Act","Part 41-1a-7 Transfer of Ownership"],"source_url":"https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title41/Chapter1a/41-1a-S704.html","current_through":"2026 General Session","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-03T11:34:33Z","sha256":"4f8f9e4a03965ae5281b6a75307c8eb03ff714826ecb8156c733ee951ad95deb","source_id":"us-ut","stale":false,"prev":"us-ut/utah-code-41-1a-703","next":"us-ut/utah-code-41-1a-705"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
