{"data":{"id":"us-ut/utah-code-41-1a-712","jurisdiction":"us-ut","citation":"Utah Code § 41-1a-712","heading":"Foreign vehicle disclosure requirements -- Penalties -- Civil damages.","body":"(1) A person may not knowingly sell or offer for sale in this state any vehicle that was initially delivered for disposition or sale in a country other than the United States of America unless, prior to the sale, the person provides written notice to the purchaser on a separate form furnished by the Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division:\n(a) that indicates:\n(i) that the vehicle was initially delivered for disposition or sale in a country outside of the United States as indicated on the Manufacturer's Statement of Origin or similar ownership document; and\n(ii) the country where the vehicle was initially delivered for the disposition or sale; and\n(b) that contains language substantially similar to each of the following statements:\n(i) \"the odometer for this vehicle may have been converted to miles\";\n(ii) \"this vehicle meets U.S. Department of Transportation safety standards\"; and\n(iii) \"this vehicle may have manufacturer warranty exclusions if sold or offered for sale in this country.\"\n(2) A person who violates this section is guilty of a class B misdemeanor.\n(3)\n(a) In addition to any other penalties, a purchaser may bring a civil action to recover damages resulting from a seller's failure to provide notice as required under this section.\n(b) The amount of damages that may be recovered in a civil action are the actual damages or $1,500, whichever is greater.","path":["Title 41 Motor Vehicles","Chapter 41-1a Motor Vehicle Act","Part 41-1a-7 Transfer of Ownership"],"source_url":"https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title41/Chapter1a/41-1a-S712.html","current_through":"2026 General Session","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-03T11:34:33Z","sha256":"046322d7962f201b6fcc3244737e302b8cb42d3646f547d54bb8c7f6f09c227d","source_id":"us-ut","stale":false,"prev":"us-ut/utah-code-41-1a-711","next":"us-ut/utah-code-41-1a-801"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
