{"data":{"id":"us-ut/utah-code-41-27-201","jurisdiction":"us-ut","citation":"Utah Code § 41-27-201","heading":"Novel vehicle registration.","body":"(1) An owner registering a vehicle shall provide the VIN, if applicable.\n(2) The division shall identify a vehicle category based on the VIN.\n(3) If the vehicle does not have a VIN, or if the division is unable to determine the vehicle category based on the VIN:\n(a) the owner shall provide the division with a description of the vehicle, including the vehicle's purpose; and\n(b) if the description of the vehicle fits with an existing category of vehicle, the vehicle shall be registered in accordance with that vehicle category.\n(4) The vehicle shall be registered as a novel vehicle if:\n(a) the vehicle is not expressly exempt from registration; and\n(b)\n(i) the vehicle does not fit within a vehicle category;\n(ii) the unique characteristics of the vehicle make it unclear whether the vehicle fits within a vehicle category; or\n(iii) a reasonable person would not consider the vehicle to be clearly included in an existing vehicle category.\n(5) A person registering a novel vehicle shall pay:\n(a) in accordance with Section 59-2-405, an annual $1 fee in lieu of property tax; and\n(b) an annual $1 registration fee, to be deposited into the Transportation Fund.\n(6) The division shall issue a registration sticker or license plate for a vehicle that is registered as a novel vehicle, as appropriate.\n(7) A vehicle registered as a street-legal novel vehicle is subject to the requirements described in Section 41-6a-1509.\n(8) The division may provide title to a novel vehicle.\n(9) Except as expressly provided in this chapter:\n(a) a novel vehicle that is not a watercraft is subject to the provisions applicable to an off-highway vehicle under Chapter 22, Off-Highway Vehicles; and\n(b) a novel vehicle that is a watercraft is subject to the provisions applicable to a motorboat under Title 73, Chapter 18, State Boating Act.","path":["Title 41 Motor Vehicles","Chapter 41-27 Novel Vehicle Registration","Part 41-27-2 Registration Process"],"source_url":"https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title41/Chapter27/41-27-S201.html","current_through":"2026 General Session","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-03T11:34:33Z","sha256":"2870815c57a3390967134815323f0b10a7c9c038510d119769b53285a7754252","source_id":"us-ut","stale":false,"prev":"us-ut/utah-code-41-27-101","next":"us-ut/utah-code-41-27-202"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
