{"data":{"id":"us-ut/utah-code-41-6a-1205","jurisdiction":"us-ut","citation":"Utah Code § 41-6a-1205","heading":"Railroad grade crossings -- Certain vehicles must stop -- Exceptions -- Rules.","body":"(1) An operator of a commercial motor vehicle, as defined under Section 53-3-102, shall upon approaching a railroad grade crossing:\n(a) except as provided in Subsection (2), slow down and check that the tracks are clear of an approaching railroad train or other on-track equipment;\n(b) stop within 50 feet, but not closer than 15 feet, from the nearest rail of the railroad track before reaching the crossing if the tracks are not clear;\n(c) obey all traffic control devices or the directions of a peace officer, or other crossing official at the crossing; and\n(d) before proceeding over a railroad grade crossing:\n(i) ensure that the vehicle has sufficient space to drive completely through a railroad grade crossing without stopping; and\n(ii) ensure that the vehicle has sufficient undercarriage clearance to safely and completely pass through the crossing.\n(2) Except as provided in Subsection (3), the operator of a vehicle described in 49 CFR 392.10:\n(a) shall stop within 50 feet, but not closer than 15 feet, from the nearest rail of the railroad track before crossing, at grade, any track of a railroad;\n(b) while stopped, shall:\n(i) look in both directions along the railroad track for:\n(A) a sign of an approaching railroad train or other on-track equipment; or\n(B) a signal indicating the approach of a railroad train or other on-track equipment; and\n(ii) listen for a signal indicating the approach of a railroad train or other on-track equipment;\n(c) may proceed across the railroad track only when reasonably safe to cross; and\n(d) after stopping and safely proceeding, may not manually shift gears while crossing the railroad track.\n(3) This section does not apply at a:\n(a) railroad grade crossing where traffic is controlled by a peace officer or other crossing official;\n(b) railroad grade crossing where traffic is regulated by a traffic-control signal;\n(c) railroad grade crossing where a traffic-control device gives notice that the stopping requirements of this section are not applicable; or\n(d) other railroad grade crossings excluded under 49 CFR 392.10.\n(4) A violation of this section is an infraction.","path":["Title 41 Motor Vehicles","Chapter 41-6a Traffic Code","Part 41-6a-12 Railroad Trains, Railroad Grade Crossings, and Safety Zones"],"source_url":"https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title41/Chapter6a/41-6a-S1205.html","current_through":"2026 General Session","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-03T11:34:33Z","sha256":"659782775eeaae94fe398ace219a7cbd5b2eb4ecb30901dc7ecbbd42bf563ea6","source_id":"us-ut","stale":false,"prev":"us-ut/utah-code-41-6a-1204","next":"us-ut/utah-code-41-6a-1206"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
