{"data":{"id":"us-ut/utah-code-41-6a-1206","jurisdiction":"us-ut","citation":"Utah Code § 41-6a-1206","heading":"Railroad crossing duties respecting crawler type tractor, power shovel, derrick, or other equipment or structure.","body":"(1) A person may not operate or move the following on or across any tracks at a railroad grade crossing without first complying with this section:\n(a) a crawler type tractor;\n(b) a power shovel;\n(c) a derrick;\n(d) a roller; or\n(e) any equipment or structure having:\n(i) normal operating speed of 10 or less miles per hour; or\n(ii) a vertical body or load clearance of less than:\n(A) 1/2 inch per foot of the distance between any two adjacent axles; or\n(B) in any event, nine inches measured above the level surface of a roadway.\n(2) A person intending to operate or move a vehicle or equipment described in Subsection (1) on or across railroad tracks at a railroad grade crossing shall give to the railroad:\n(a) notice of the person's intended crossing; and\n(b) reasonable time to provide proper protection at the railroad grade crossing.\n(3) Before making a crossing under this section, a person operating or moving a vehicle or equipment described in Subsection (1):\n(a) shall first stop within 50 feet but not closer than 15 feet from the nearest rail of the railway;\n(b) while stopped, shall:\n(i) look in both directions along the railroad track for:\n(A) a sign of an approaching railroad train or other on-track equipment; or\n(B) a signal indicating the approach of a railroad train or other on-track equipment; and\n(ii) listen for a signal indicating the approach of a railroad train or other on-track equipment; and\n(c) may proceed across the track only when the crossing can be made safely.\n(4) A person operating or moving a vehicle or equipment described in Subsection (1) shall obey all traffic control devices or the directions of a peace officer or other crossing official at the crossing.\n(5) A violation of this section is an infraction.","path":["Title 41 Motor Vehicles","Chapter 41-6a Traffic Code","Part 41-6a-12 Railroad Trains, Railroad Grade Crossings, and Safety Zones"],"source_url":"https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title41/Chapter6a/41-6a-S1206.html","current_through":"2026 General Session","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-03T11:34:33Z","sha256":"e0c5fcc05f55807d112cfd042db2769b51a48396ab971e8feadeae72238d16d8","source_id":"us-ut","stale":false,"prev":"us-ut/utah-code-41-6a-1205","next":"us-ut/utah-code-41-6a-1301"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
