{"data":{"id":"us-ut/utah-code-41-6a-1634","jurisdiction":"us-ut","citation":"Utah Code § 41-6a-1634","heading":"Safety chains on towed vehicles required -- Exceptions.","body":"(1) A towed vehicle shall be coupled by means of a safety chain, cable or equivalent device, in addition to the regular trailer hitch or coupling.\n(2) Except as provided under Subsection (3), a safety chain, cable or equivalent device shall be:\n(a) securely connected with the chassis of the towing vehicle, the towed vehicle, and the drawbar;\n(b) of sufficient material and strength to prevent the two vehicles from becoming separated; and\n(c) attached to:\n(i) have no more slack than is necessary for proper turning;\n(ii) the trailer drawbar to prevent it from dropping to the ground; and\n(iii) assure the towed vehicle follows substantially in the course of the towing vehicle in case the vehicles become separated.\n(3) A violation of Subsection (1) or (2) is an infraction.\n(4) The provisions of Subsection (2) do not apply to a:\n(a) semitrailer having a connecting device composed of a fifth wheel and king pin assembly;\n(b) pole trailer; or\n(c) trailer being towed by a bicycle.","path":["Title 41 Motor Vehicles","Chapter 41-6a Traffic Code","Part 41-6a-16 Vehicle Equipment"],"source_url":"https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title41/Chapter6a/41-6a-S1634.html","current_through":"2026 General Session","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-03T11:34:33Z","sha256":"50db234535b1d0bfafeef953c0139d3b2701c93b91bff566b8a9930a9b836baa","source_id":"us-ut","stale":false,"prev":"us-ut/utah-code-41-6a-1633","next":"us-ut/utah-code-41-6a-1635"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
