{"data":{"id":"us-ut/utah-code-41-6a-311","jurisdiction":"us-ut","citation":"Utah Code § 41-6a-311","heading":"Interference with traffic-control devices prohibited -- Traffic signal preemption device prohibited -- Exceptions -- Defense.","body":"(1) Except as provided in Subsection (3), a person may not alter, deface, damage, knock down, or remove any:\n(a) traffic-control device;\n(b) traffic-monitoring device; or\n(c) railroad traffic-control device.\n(2) Except as provided in Subsection (3), a person may not:\n(a) knowingly use a traffic signal preemption device to interfere with the authorized operation or the authorized cycle of a traffic-control signal; or\n(b) operate a motor vehicle on a highway while in possession of a traffic signal preemption device.\n(3) The provisions of Subsections (1) and (2) do not apply to a person authorized by the highway authority or railroad authority with jurisdiction over the device.\n(4) A violation of Subsection (1) or (2) is a class C misdemeanor.\n(5) It is an affirmative defense to a charge under Subsection (2)(b) that the traffic signal preemption device was inoperative and could not be readily used at the time of the citation or arrest.","path":["Title 41 Motor Vehicles","Chapter 41-6a Traffic Code","Part 41-6a-3 Traffic-Control Devices"],"source_url":"https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title41/Chapter6a/41-6a-S311.html","current_through":"2026 General Session","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-03T11:34:33Z","sha256":"3c67a049a068a628e932db476be9ea7d298144b3619d3b799bc0e6cfbc07dfa0","source_id":"us-ut","stale":false,"prev":"us-ut/utah-code-41-6a-310","next":"us-ut/utah-code-41-6a-401"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
