{"data":{"id":"us-ut/utah-code-41-6a-711","jurisdiction":"us-ut","citation":"Utah Code § 41-6a-711","heading":"Following another vehicle -- Safe distance -- Exceptions -- Penalty.","body":"(1) As used in this section, \"connected platooning system\" means a system that uses vehicle-to-vehicle communication to electronically coordinate the speed and braking of a lead vehicle with the speed and braking of one or more following vehicles.\n(2) The operator of a vehicle:\n(a) may not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having regard for the:\n(i) speed of the vehicles;\n(ii) traffic upon the highway; and\n(iii) condition of the highway; and\n(b) shall follow at a distance so that at least two seconds elapse before reaching the location of the vehicle directly in front of the operator's vehicle.\n(3) Subsection (2)(b) does not apply to:\n(a) funeral processions or to congested traffic conditions resulting in prevailing vehicle speeds of less than 35 miles per hour; or\n(b) the operator of a vehicle that is:\n(i) part of a connected platooning system; and\n(ii) not the lead vehicle.\n(4) A violation of Subsection (2) is an infraction.","path":["Title 41 Motor Vehicles","Chapter 41-6a Traffic Code","Part 41-6a-7 Driving on Right Side of Highway and Passing"],"source_url":"https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title41/Chapter6a/41-6a-S711.html","current_through":"2026 General Session","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-03T11:34:33Z","sha256":"4d3a09419d89c35b78cd7b75baf589c085a2a97825cecd906c217ffd04e5f115","source_id":"us-ut","stale":false,"prev":"us-ut/utah-code-41-6a-710","next":"us-ut/utah-code-41-6a-712"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
