{"data":{"id":"us-ut/utah-code-53g-6-902","jurisdiction":"us-ut","citation":"Utah Code § 53G-6-902","heading":"Participation in school athletic activities.","body":"(1) Notwithstanding any state board rule:\n(a) a public school or LEA, or a private school that competes against a public school or LEA, shall expressly designate school athletic activities and teams as one of the following, based on sex:\n(i) designated for students of the male sex;\n(ii) designated for students of the female sex; or\n(iii) \"coed\" or \"mixed\";\n(b) a student of the male sex may not compete, and a public school or LEA may not allow a student of the male sex to compete, with a team designated for students of the female sex in an interscholastic athletic activity; and\n(c) a government entity or licensing or accrediting organization may not entertain a complaint, open an investigation, or take any other adverse action against a school or LEA described in Subsection (1)(a) for maintaining separate school athletic activities for students of the female sex.\n(2) Nothing in this section prohibits an LEA or school from allowing a student of either gender from participating with a team designated for students of the female sex, consistent with school policy, outside of competition in an interscholastic athletic activity, in accordance with Subsection (1)(b).","path":["Title 53G Public Education System -- Local Administration","Chapter 53G-6 Participation in Public Schools","Part 53G-6-9 Participation in Female Sports"],"source_url":"https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title53G/Chapter6/53G-6-S902.html","current_through":"2026 General Session","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-03T11:34:33Z","sha256":"14aa278ff001b96f683a0f84e326c2b91ffb5054d93315b55b979ec019ec643b","source_id":"us-ut","stale":false,"prev":"us-ut/utah-code-53g-6-901","next":"us-ut/utah-code-53g-6-903"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
