{"data":{"id":"us-ut/utah-code-58-24b-503","jurisdiction":"us-ut","citation":"Utah Code § 58-24b-503","heading":"Lawful and unlawful use of titles and terms -- Unlawful advertising or promotion.","body":"(1) A person who is a licensed physical therapist shall use the letters \"PT\" in connection with the person's name or business in order to indicate that the person is a licensed physical therapist.\n(2) A person who is a licensed physical therapist assistant shall use the letters \"PTA\" in connection with the person's name or business in order to indicate that the person is a licensed physical therapist assistant.\n(3) It is unlawful for a person who is not a licensed physical therapist, a licensed physical therapist assistant, or a person described in Subsection 58-24b-304(1)(e) to:\n(a) use, in connection with the person's name or business, any of the following words or abbreviations:\n(i) physical therapy, except to the extent that the word is used to describe conduct that a person is licensed to engage in under another law of the state;\n(ii) physiotherapy; or\n(iii) any other word, abbreviation, or insignia, indicating or implying, directly or indirectly, that the person practices physical therapy; or\n(b) offer, provide, or bill a person for:\n(i) physical therapy services or anything that is characterized as physical therapy services; or\n(ii) physiotherapy services or anything that is characterized as physiotherapy services.\n(4) It is unlawful for a person who is not a licensed physical therapist to:\n(a) except as provided in Subsection (6), use, in connection with the person's name or business, any of the following words or abbreviations:\n(i) physical therapist;\n(ii) physiotherapist;\n(iii) PT;\n(iv) DPT;\n(v) MPT; or\n(vi) any other word, abbreviation, or insignia, indicating or implying, directly or indirectly, that the person is a physical therapist or physiotherapist;\n(b) advertise that a person who is not a licensed physical therapist is a physical therapist or physiotherapist; or\n(c) promote a person who is not a licensed physical therapist as a physical therapist or physiotherapist.\n(5) It is unlawful for a person who is not a licensed physical therapist assistant to:\n(a) use, in connection with the person's name or business, any of the following words or abbreviations:\n(i) physical therapist assistant;\n(ii) physiotherapist assistant;\n(iii) PTA; or\n(iv) any other word, abbreviation, or insignia, indicating or implying, directly or indirectly, that the person is a physical therapist assistant or a physiotherapist assistant;\n(b) advertise that a person who is not a licensed physical therapist assistant is a physical therapist assistant or a physiotherapist assistant; or\n(c) promote a person who is not a licensed physical therapist assistant as a physical therapist assistant or physiotherapist assistant.\n(6) Subsection (4)(a) does not prohibit a person from using a word or abbreviation described in Subsection (4)(a) in connection with the person's business, if the person employs a physical therapist at the person's business.","path":["Title 58 Occupations and Professions","Chapter 58-24b Physical Therapy Practice Act","Part 58-24b-5 Unlawful and Unprofessional Conduct"],"source_url":"https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title58/Chapter24b/58-24b-S503.html","current_through":"2026 General Session","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-03T11:34:33Z","sha256":"17c4346ed23720525bd33ee0a236064f636a9688ae1f18a700d6e45cb3602b72","source_id":"us-ut","stale":false,"prev":"us-ut/utah-code-58-24b-502","next":"us-ut/utah-code-58-24b-504"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
