{"data":{"id":"us-ut/utah-code-58-47b-302","jurisdiction":"us-ut","citation":"Utah Code § 58-47b-302","heading":"Qualifications for registration and licensure -- Individuals.","body":"(1) An applicant for a massage assistant-in-training license shall provide satisfactory evidence to the division that the applicant will practice as a massage assistant-in-training only under the supervision of a massage therapy supervisor.\n(2) An applicant for a massage assistant license shall:\n(a)\n(i) complete 300 hours of education that meets the standards the division requires by rule;\n(ii) complete training on the activities described in Subsection (5)(d) while the applicant is enrolled in massage school; and\n(iii) pass an examination as the division requires by rule;\n(b)\n(i) while the applicant is licensed as a massage assistant-in-training:\n(A) complete at least 150 hours of education that meets the standards the division requires by rule under the direct supervision of a massage therapy supervisor; and\n(B) complete 150 hours of education that meets the standards the division requires by rule under the indirect supervision of a massage therapy supervisor;\n(ii) complete training on the activities described in Subsection (5)(d); and\n(iii) pass an examination as the division requires by rule; or\n(c)\n(i) have a massage safety permit; and\n(ii) pass an examination as the division requires by rule that contains questions that demonstrate the applicant's understanding of:\n(A) the basics of anatomy;\n(B) the basics of contraindications relating to massage;\n(C) the basics of kinesiology;\n(D) the basics of pathology;\n(E) the basics of physiology; and\n(F) the laws and rules relating to massage therapy.\n(3) An applicant for a massage apprentice license shall provide satisfactory evidence to the division that the applicant will practice as a massage apprentice only under the supervision of a massage therapy supervisor as the division requires by rule.\n(4) An applicant for a massage therapist license shall:\n(a)\n(i)\n(A) have graduated from a school of massage having a curriculum that meets the standards the division requires by rule; and\n(B) complete training on the activities described in Subsection (5)(d) while the applicant is enrolled in massage school;\n(ii)\n(A) have completed equivalent education in compliance with standards the division requires by rule; and\n(B) complete training on the activities described in Subsection (5)(d); or\n(iii)\n(A) have completed a massage apprenticeship program consisting of a minimum of 1,000 hours of supervised training in accordance with standards the division requires by rule; and\n(B) complete training on the activities described in Subsection (5)(d) while the applicant is a massage apprentice; and\n(b) pass an examination as the division requires by rule.\n(5) An applicant for a massage safety permit shall:\n(a) submit an application in a form the division approves;\n(b) pay a fee determined by the department under Section 63J-1-504;\n(c) be 18 years old or older; and\n(d) complete an educational module the division requires by rule that includes:\n(i) practicing physical boundaries;\n(ii) draping;\n(iii) gaining consent; and\n(iv) taking a medical history.\n(6) An applicant for licensure under this chapter shall:\n(a) submit an application in a form the division approves;\n(b) pay a fee determined by the department under Section 63J-1-504;\n(c) be 18 years old or older;\n(d) consent to, and complete, a criminal background check, described in Section 58-1-301.5;\n(e) meet any standard related to the criminal background check described in Subsection (6)(d) as the division requires by rule; and\n(f) disclose any criminal history the division requests on a form the division approves.\n(7) Under Title 63G, Chapter 3, Utah Administrative Rulemaking Act, the division shall make rules establishing:\n(a) the examinations required by this chapter;\n(b) the standards of a massage assistant-in-training program;\n(c) the standards for a massage school curriculum;\n(d) the equivalent education and training for a licensed massage therapist;\n(e) the standards of a massage apprenticeship program including supervision requirements;\n(f) the educational module described in Subsection (5)(d); and\n(g) the standards for the criminal background check described in Subsection (6)(e).","path":["Title 58 Occupations and Professions","Chapter 58-47b Massage Therapy Practice Act","Part 58-47b-3 Licensing"],"source_url":"https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title58/Chapter47b/58-47b-S302.html","current_through":"2026 General Session","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-03T11:34:33Z","sha256":"9bf38de2a8d60cd2c7a0c6a3cb3586686cd666e6b044b91e2d4c9832e5924053","source_id":"us-ut","stale":false,"prev":"us-ut/utah-code-58-47b-301.1","next":"us-ut/utah-code-58-47b-302.2"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
