{"data":{"id":"us-ut/utah-code-76-3-301","jurisdiction":"us-ut","citation":"Utah Code § 76-3-301","heading":"Fines of individuals.","body":"(1) An individual convicted of an offense may be sentenced to pay a fine, not exceeding:\n(a) $10,000 for a felony conviction of the first degree or second degree;\n(b) $5,000 for a felony conviction of the third degree;\n(c) $2,500 for a class A misdemeanor conviction;\n(d) $1,000 for a class B misdemeanor conviction;\n(e) $750 for a class C misdemeanor conviction or infraction conviction; and\n(f) any greater amounts specifically authorized by statute.\n(2)\n(a) An individual convicted of a misdemeanor or infraction and sentenced to pay a fine may not be charged by a court:\n(i) notwithstanding Section 15-1-4, interest on the judgment that in the aggregate is more than 25% of the initial fine; or\n(ii) that issues an order to show cause under Section 78B-6-317 for failure to pay the fine, interest that is more than 25% of the initial fine.\n(b) An individual convicted only of an infraction and sentenced to pay a fine may not be charged:\n(i) by the Office of State Debt Collection, late fees and interest that in the aggregate are more than 25% of the initial fine; or\n(ii) by a third-party debt contractor of the Office of State Debt Collection, additional fees.\n(3) Subsection (2) does not apply to a case that includes:\n(a) victim restitution; or\n(b) a felony conviction, even if that felony conviction is later reduced.\n(4) This section does not apply to a corporation, association, partnership, government, or governmental instrumentality.","path":["Title 76 Criminal Offenses","Chapter 76-3 Punishments","Part 76-3-3 Fines and Special Sanctions"],"source_url":"https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title76/Chapter3/76-3-S301.html","current_through":"2026 General Session","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-03T11:34:34Z","sha256":"11bd2394275024d7fb2700320b5758f37277ed4a3253a76a31b1dc152bd23fe3","source_id":"us-ut","stale":false,"prev":"us-ut/utah-code-76-3-209","next":"us-ut/utah-code-76-3-301.5"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
