{"data":{"id":"us-ut/utah-code-76-8-509","jurisdiction":"us-ut","citation":"Utah Code § 76-8-509","heading":"Extortion or bribery to dismiss a criminal proceeding.","body":"(1)\n(a) As used in this section, \"victim\" includes a child or other individual under the care or custody of a parent or guardian.\n(b) Terms defined in Sections 76-1-101.5, 76-8-101, and 76-8-501 apply to this section.\n(2) An actor commits extortion or bribery to dismiss a criminal proceeding if the actor attempts to induce an alleged victim of a crime to take an action to secure the dismissal or to prevent the filing of a criminal complaint, indictment, or information by:\n(a) the use of force; or\n(b) a threat that would constitute a means of committing the offense of theft by extortion under Section 76-6-406 if the threat were employed to obtain property or by promise of a reward or pecuniary benefit.\n(3) A violation of Subsection (2) is a second degree felony.","path":["Title 76 Criminal Offenses","Chapter 76-8 Offenses Against the Administration of Government","Part 76-8-5 Falsification in Official Matters"],"source_url":"https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title76/Chapter8/76-8-S509.html","current_through":"2026 General Session","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-03T11:34:34Z","sha256":"42c0b059b27e0ff22ff71ddcb5cd32d19626744dbc67f3929dbf92d25417c012","source_id":"us-ut","stale":false,"prev":"us-ut/utah-code-76-8-508.7","next":"us-ut/utah-code-76-8-510.5"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
