{"data":{"id":"us-ut/utah-code-78b-1-201","jurisdiction":"us-ut","citation":"Utah Code § 78B-1-201","heading":"Definitions.","body":"As used in this part:\n(1) \"Appointing authority\" means the presiding officer or similar official of any court, board, commission, authority, department, agency, legislative body, or of any proceeding of any nature where a qualified interpreter is required under this part.\n(2) \" Deaf or hard of hearing person\" and \" deaf or hard of hearing parent\" means a deaf or hard of hearing person who, because of sensory or environmental conditions, requires the assistance of a qualified interpreter or other special assistance for communicative purposes.\n(3) \"Necessary steps\" or \"necessary services\" include provisions of qualified interpreters, lip reading, pen and paper, typewriters, closed-circuit television with closed-caption translations, computers with print-out capability, and telecommunications devices for the deaf or similar devices.\n(4) \"Qualified interpreter\" means a sign language or oral interpreter as provided in Sections 78B-1-203 and 78B-1-206 of this part.","path":["Title 78B Judicial Code","Chapter 78B-1 Juries and Witnesses","Part 78B-1-2 Interpreters for Hearing Impaired"],"source_url":"https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title78B/Chapter1/78B-1-S201.html","current_through":"2026 General Session","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-03T11:34:34Z","sha256":"37cc08109c1a62102112ed95ad188305802c15ed9763dc3ae58ddb8c05c78ea7","source_id":"us-ut","stale":false,"prev":"us-ut/utah-code-78b-1-152","next":"us-ut/utah-code-78b-1-202"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
