{"data":{"id":"us-ut/utah-code-81-8-204","jurisdiction":"us-ut","citation":"Utah Code § 81-8-204","heading":"Simultaneous proceedings in another state.","body":"(1) A tribunal of this state may exercise jurisdiction to establish a support order if the petition or comparable pleading is filed after a pleading is filed in another state or a foreign country only if:\n(a) the petition or comparable pleading in this state is filed before the expiration of the time allowed in the other state or the foreign country for filing a responsive pleading challenging the exercise of jurisdiction by the other state or the foreign country;\n(b) the contesting party timely challenges the exercise of jurisdiction in the other state or the foreign country; and\n(c) if relevant, this state is the home state of the child.\n(2) A tribunal of this state may not exercise jurisdiction to establish a support order if the petition or comparable pleading is filed before a petition or comparable pleading is filed in another state or a foreign country if:\n(a) the petition or comparable pleading in the other state or foreign country is filed before the expiration of the time allowed in this state for filing a responsive pleading challenging the exercise of jurisdiction by this state;\n(b) the contesting party timely challenges the exercise of jurisdiction in this state; and\n(c) if relevant, the other state or foreign country is the home of the child.","path":["Title 81 Utah Domestic Relations Code","Chapter 81-8 Uniform Interstate Family Support Act","Part 81-8-2 Jurisdiction"],"source_url":"https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title81/Chapter8/81-8-S204.html","current_through":"2026 General Session","vintage":"","retrieved_at":"2026-09-03T11:34:34Z","sha256":"8e78de2f794af00ead5245fbff183f317c985cd39cbcd74efdfc0041b971fafd","source_id":"us-ut","stale":false,"prev":"us-ut/utah-code-81-8-203","next":"us-ut/utah-code-81-8-205"},"notice":"GroundRules: Original legal text.
